Choosing Your Kitchen Countertop Materials

There’s almost nothing more important than the choice you make regarding the types of countertops you use in your kitchen. At Affordable Quality Marble & Granite, we stock amazing material for kitchen countertops including granite, marble, and quartz—and one of our favorite parts of what we do is helping you choose a material that suits your home and your lifestyle.

In this article, we’ll go over three types of stones that we have in our showroom.

Get to Know Marble

Marble is a stone that boasts sophistication and beauty. It comes in crisp, bright aesthetics that can do wonders for kitchens, especially those that see their fair share of natural light. When marble interacts with natural light, it turns even the drabbest room into something to be marveled at.

Marble requires more care than other natural stones because it’s softer and more porous than they are. Always remember to keep your marble sealed and to clean up spills right away—before they become stains. Stay away from acidic cleaners like bleach, vinegar, and anything citrusy because these materials can damage your stone.

Marble can last up to a hundred years if you know how to take care of it properly.

Get to Know Granite

Granite is one of the best materials for kitchen countertops because it’s not only bold in the way it looks, but also the way it performs. This is one of the toughest stones you’ll find; it can hold up to heat, stains, and scratches, all the while looking beautiful.

Granite comes in all sorts of patterns and colorations, and it’s known for its tan shades—but it can be found in light and dark slabs as well. Much like marble, it is a porous stone (though not quite as porous), so it needs to be sealed regularly.

You might think that, with all this toughness, granite should be difficult to take care of—but it’s not. All you need is soap and water to keep it clean.

Get to Know Quartz

Quartz is an engineered stone that, unlike marble and granite, is not porous. It’s not porous because, while it’s made of natural quartz materials, there are also polymers and resins added that bind all the particles together—and pigments for color. All of those ingredients mixed together make for a hard surface that does not sustain damage easily.

Since quartz is nonporous, that means it’s very hygienic and easy to clean—the perfect material for a kitchen. It’s also very durable, thanks to its hardness, but it’s not as tough on heat as natural stones—thanks to the resins included in its makeup. Because of this, be careful when handling hot pots and pans, and always make sure to use a trivet.
